Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria. Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body like brain, bones, skin and intestine.
The classic symptoms of active TB are a chronic cough with blood-containing mucus, fever, night sweats, feeling tired and unwell and weight loss.
Tuberculosis is spread from one person to the next through the air when people who have active TB in their lungs or throat cough, spit, speak, or sneeze and other people nearby breathe in the bacteria and become infected.
TB is NOT spread by
• shaking someone’s hand
• sharing food or drink
• touching bed linens or toilet seats
• sharing toothbrushes
• kissing
There are 2 types of TB:
• Latent or Inactive TB: The bacteria are present in your body but aren’t making you sick or contagious. Your immune system is protecting your body from the bacteria. You aren’t able to spread the disease.
• Active TB: The bacteria are present and are causing symptoms. Your immune system wasn’t able to fight them. You may be able to spread the disease.
Can tuberculosis be prevented?
The vaccine for tuberculosis is called the Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine. The BCG vaccine does not prevent a person from becoming infected with TB if exposed to it, but it helps prevent severe or life-threatening TB disease, especially in young children. So there need to constantly boost your immune system to fìght off or prevent this infectious disease by eating healthy foods and maintaining a good lifestyle.
