Brain Tumor

What is a brain tumor?

A brain tumor is a noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant) growth in the brain. It may originate in the brain or have spread (metastasized) to the brain from another part of the body.

When cells grow abnormally they may form a lump called a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant.

A benign tumor grows and stays in one place. It is unlikely to spread to another part of your body. Benign tumor are not cancerous. But a benign brain tumor may cause damage just by being there and pressing on your brain. This can be life-threatening, or affect other parts of your body, and may need urgent treatment.

A malignant tumor is cancerous. It can spread to other areas of the brain, or the body. It can also be called brain cancer. Some benign tumors can become malignant.

Types of brain tumor

Brain tumors can either be ‘primary’ or ‘secondary’.

A primary brain tumor include tumors that originate from the tissues of the brain or the brain’s immediate surroundings.  They may be cancerous or noncancerous.

A secondary brain tumor include tumors that arise elsewhere in the body (such as the breast or lungs or colon) and migrate to the brain, usually through the bloodstream. Metastatic tumors are considered cancer and are malignant.

There are many types of brain tumors. Together with tumors of the spinal cord, they are collectively called central nervous system (CNS) tumors.

There are more than 120 types of brain and CNS tumors. Today, most medical institutions use the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system to identify brain tumors. The WHO classifies brain tumors by cell origin and how the cells behave, from the least aggressive (benign) to the most aggressive (malignant). Some tumor types are assigned a grade, ranging from Grade I (least malignant) to Grade IV (most malignant), which signifies the rate of growth.
