Bedsores

Bedsores

Bedsores, also called pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers. Bedsores are ulcers that happen on areas of the skin that are under pressure from lying in bed, sitting in a wheelchair, and/or wearing a cast for a prolonged period.
Bedsores can happen when a person is bedridden, unconscious, unable to sense pain, or immobile due to medical conditions like paralysis, spinal problems and several others — the skin is constantly pressed between the bones and the bed. As a result, the blood supply to skin is hindered, resulting in skin damage.

What Are The Symptoms Of Bedsores?

Each stage of a bedsore has different symptoms. Depending on the stage, you may have any of the following:

• skin discoloration

• pain in the affected area
infection

• Pus-like draining

• swelling or tenderness of the area

• An area of skin that’s softer or feels cooler or warmer to the touch than other areas

What Causes Bedsores?

Prolonged pressure is essentially the main cause of a bedsore with other factors such as moisture, poor circulation, and poor nutrition. Lying on a certain part of your body for long periods may cause your skin to break down.

The areas around the elbows, hips, heels, ankles, buttocks, spine, shoulder blades, back of the arms and legs are especially vulnerable to bedsores.

Risk Factors For Bedsores

There are a number of risk factors for bedsores:

• Excessive moisture as well as skin irritants like urine and feces, which result from poor hygiene, can also contribute to bedsores formation.

• Friction is also a contributor, such as when a person who is confined to bed has sheets dragged from under them.

• You may be at risk if you can’t move or change positions by yourself while lying in bed or sitting in a wheelchair.

• Your skin may be more fragile and delicate if you’re an older adult, which can put you at increased risk

• Poor eating habits or not getting enough nutrients in your diet may influence the condition of your skin, which can increase your risk.

• Conditions like diabetes, vascular disease may restrict your blood circulation, which can increase the risk of  tissue damage such as bedsores in your skin

• Lack of sensory perception may increase the risk of developing bedsores. Spinal cord injuries, neurological disorders and other conditions can result in a loss of sensation. An inability to feel pain or discomfort can result in not being aware of warning signs and the need to change position.

Prevention And Management of Bedsores

• When a patient is immobile or on a wheelchair then repositioning of the patient every 2 hours could help to avoid constant pressure against the body and would redistribute the body weight and promote blood flow to the tissues. Pillows can help shift the weight if you are unable to move.

• Skin should be inspected and cleaned regularly by the attendant.

• Keep the infected area dry to keep infections at bay as bacteria grow in moist mediums.

• Blood sugar levels of patients who challenged with diabetes should be well controlled as high sugar levels would not allow the ulcer to heal and could lead to gangrene, and in severe cases, amputation.

• Adequate nutrition is an integral part of treatment to help the ulcer to heal faster.  So intake of adequate fruits and vegetables would help in healing the skin lesion faster and improve the overall immunity of the patient too.
