Pott disease, also known as tuberculosis spondylitis, it is a type of tuberculosis of the spine. The lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae areas of the spine are most often affected. It causes severe curve in the upper spine. It occurs outside the lungs. It causes a kind of tuberculous arthritis of the intervertebral joints of the spine.

Signs Of Pott Disease

• They tend to assume a protective upright, stiff position.
• If there is neural involvement there will be neurological signs.

Causes Of Pott Disease

Pott disease is caused when the vertebrae become soft and collapse as the result of caries or osteitis. Typically this is caused by the inhalation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. This bacteria causes tuberculosis in the lungs. When this infection spreads from the lungs to the spine via blood, it causes tuberculosis of the spine. The bacteria causes infection in the spine. This leads to spine arthritis. If the two contiguous joints of the spine become infected, the disc of cartilage between them cannot receive the required nutrients. This damages the disc. The disc then collapses leading to spinal cord damage. A person with Pott disease often develops kyphosis, which results in a hunchback. This is often referred to as Pott’s curvature. In some cases, a person with Pott’s disease may also develop paralysis, referred to as Pott’s paraplegia, when the spinal nerves become affected by the curvature.

If not treated properly, Pott disease may lead to;
• Severe bone deformity
• Damage the nerves and even causes  Paralysis

Diagosis Of Pott Disease

•  Blood tests (complete blood count)

•  Tuberculin skin test

•  Radiographs of the spine

• Bone scan

• CT scan  of the spine

• Bone biopsy

• MRI
